New Delhi, October 12, 2020: In a first, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey has been nominated to become the first Executive Chairman for Union Territory of Ladakh's Legal Services Authority. The appointment comes pursuant to a decision by the Lieutenant-Governor in consultation with the Chief Justice of the common High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Pertinently, Justice Magrey will be become the first Executive Chairman of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority, after the abrogation of Article 370 of Indian Constitution.The abrogation made it possible for the Central Government to separate Ladakh from the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir and convert it into a new Union Territory.

The notification regarding Justice Magrey's nomination to the post reads,“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (b) of sub-section (2) of section 6 of the Legal Services Authority Act 1987 read with Rule 3 of Union Territory of Ladakh Legal Services Authorities Rules, 2020 notified vide S.O. 13, dater 09-04-2020, the Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh, in consultation with the Hon'ble Chief Justice of the common High Court for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Ladakh, hereby nominate Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey as the Executive Chairman of Union Territory of Ladakh Legal Services Authority.
